Shukokai Karate Organisations 60th Anniversary - Japan

This year marked the 60th anniversary of the Shukokai Karate Organisation in Japan. Shukokai was founded in 1949 by Chojiro Tani 9th Dan (now deceased). Samurai Karate NZ is a member of the Shukokai World Karate Association based in Kobe, Japan. As such Sensei Andrew Kowanjko, 4th Dan and New Zealand Chief Instructor, was invited to travel to Japan to help celebrate this major occasion as part of an International contingent. It took place over 4 days and included training with Japanese Chief Instructor Sensei Kawata 9th Dan, an examination, in which Sensei Andrew from Onehunga was awarded the title of Kenshi (recognition of human development), a tournament (which included a demonstration by Japanese and international instructors) and a celebration dinner and awards ceremony to conclude the event. “The four days were an amazing experience of cultural learning and exchange with wonderful locals who showed great hospitality and a strong commitment for future ties between Japanese and Western Karate”, said Sensei Andrew.
